Kindergarten Program

Welcome to the Boys & Girls Clubs
Kindergarten Program
2012-2013 School Year

Our Kindergarten Program is a structured, youth development program for our youngest members. The program is designed to provide half day kindergartners with the opportunity to participate in Boys & Girls Club activities. The kindergarten staff emphasizes social skills like sharing, caring, patience, and tolerance through direction and role modeling. Remember, to best serve your child this facility is not a daycare facility, it is designed to provide youth development programs. Professional youth development coordinators plan and organize educational as well as recreational activities throughout the day. Club activities focus on the development of self-confidence, positive social interactions, self-reliance, problem-solving, positive use of energy, and just having fun!

Monday – Thursday transportation is provided by the Lewiston School District. On Fridays the Boys & Girls Club transports our members. Kindergartners that attend the Club in the mornings will be bused to their individual schools for lunch and then onto their classrooms. Kindergartners coming to the Club in the afternoon are picked up from school after lunch and then taken to the Club. Please note that lunch is provided through the school and may include additional costs.

The Kindergarten Program is Monday – Friday from 8:30am – 3:00pm. The Boys & Girls Club also provides an Early Bird Program from 7:00am – 8:15am and an after school program, from 3:00pm – 6:00pm. Transportation is provided to and from school and there is no additional cost for your child if he/she is part of the Kindergarten Program. If your child participates before or after the Kindergarten Program they will be considered drop-in members and the "open door” policy will apply. Please see the Membership Handbook for more details.

Members are encouraged to express their feelings/needs and deal with them in a positive manner. Boys & Girls Club staff offer support, encouragement, and consistent adult guidance while building life-long relationships. Behavior management techniques are used to protect the safety and welfare of everyone involved. Time-out (isolation from programming) is used to guide the behavior of a child. Members resume participation when they show willingness to respect the established rules. Failure to correct the problem after time-out may result in a suspension of membership. Physical harassment will automatically result in a week’s suspension.

Activities & Programs

Special Units: The Kindergarten Program focuses on different themes and ideas. This gives kindergarteners the opportunity to learn about different animals, seasons, science and astronomy, etc.

Kindergarten Room/Venture Center: Much like a classroom, in this area kindergartners are provided the opportunity to make learning fun by participating in educational games, reading, learning activities, and computer games designed for their age group. Each morning and afternoon the staff will read books to the children. As the year progresses, they will have an opportunity to read as well.

Arts & Crafts: This area is all about using your imagination and discovering new talents. A focus is put on creativity along with tying in projects to special units.

Gym: Our focus in this area is to teach the importance of physical fitness, team work, and good sportsmanship. Numerous activities will be provided including new and old Club games.

Snack: All kindergartners are provided with a snack each day. This usually consists of fruit and milk or juice and crackers.

Mini Tours: Mini Tours are designed to teach our members about area businesses, how they work, and what they do. Each month we will go on one or two mini tours. Some examples are the fire station, police department, radio stations, and restaurants.

All kindergartners rotate through activities each day as a group. Activities are optional but highly recommended. If members choose not to participate in the activity they still must remain in the assigned area with the group.
