Press Release – Annual Awards Banquet 2018

Boys & Girls Clubs of the Lewis Clark Valley Recognize Local Youth, Board Members, Staff & Volunteers

Date: January 19, 2018

The Boys & Girls Clubs of the Lewis Clark Valley and P1FCU honored outstanding youth members, Board Members, staff and volunteers at their Annual Meeting and Awards Dinner on Friday, January 19th, at the Clarkston Quality Inn.  In 2017 the Club served over 5,500 youth in our community, and this event was an opportunity to recognize the dedicated individuals who make that outreach happen.  The event was sponsored by P1FCU.
2018 Youth of the Year
The highlight of the evening was hearing speeches by three candidates competing for the title of 2018 Organizational Youth of the Year for the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Lewis Clark Valley.  Arianna Bounds (a High School Senior) from the Lewiston Club, Chloe Thompson (a Junior) from the Lapwai Club, and Karmen Johnson (an 8th grader) from the Clarkston Club all gave powerful and moving speeches discussing how the Club had played a significant role in their lives.  The actual competition had been judged on the Wednesday prior, with this evenings announcing of the winner.  The judges panel included Coco Umiker – Clearwater Canyon Cellars, Samantha Skinner – Twin County United Way Executive Director and Christina Hammond – Niimipu Health Nez Perce Tribe.
All three judges took a moment to share highlights of each candidate before presenting the 2018 Organizational Youth of the Year award to Arianna Bounds of Lewiston.  They had a wonderful experience throughout the selection process, getting to know these amazing young ambassadors for the three Clubs and our community.  Arianna, Chloe, and Karmen are truly an inspiration. Arianna Bounds will go on to represent us at the Idaho State Competition in Boise next month.  Best of luck Arianna! We are all cheering for you!
Board of Directors
Mike MacDowell, President of the Board of Directors, and Jon Evans, Executive Director for the Boys & Girls Clubs, presented the Board Member of the Year Award to Jackie Peer, who is entering her fourth year as a Board Member.  Also presented was the Board Member Rookie of the Year Award going to Dr. Sennett Pierce.
We also had four Board Members this year recognized for achieving service milestones.  Don Wee was recognized for 5 years of service,  Tobe Finch and Mike MacDowell were recognized for 10 years of service and Joe Hall was recognized for 20 years of service.  It is a such a great privilege working with our Board Members who all demonstrate a devotion to our Clubs, our youth, and our community!  Thank you!
Scholarship Committee
Riley Powe, a P1FCU Financial Advisor, representing the Scholarship Committee of the Boys & Girls Clubs, presented Board President, Mike MacDowell, with a check for $18,794.38.  This supports the Club’s scholarship fund to ensure no child is turned away due to financial hardship.  This amount was raised through several events during 2017 including the Annual Christmas Tree Pickup, the Thunderbird Golf Tournament, and Kid Zone at Hot August Nights.
Volunteer of the Year
Jon Evans, the Executive Director for the Boys & Girls Clubs, recognized Kyle Conklin with the 2018 Volunteer of the Year award for his outstanding service on the Scholarship Committee and organization of the Annual Thunderbird Golf Tournament.
Coach of the Year
Jon Evans, the Executive Director for the Boys & Girls Clubs, presented Jason Earl with the Coach of the Year award.  Jason has been a coach for the Club every season for over 7 years for flag football, basketball and soccer. He is consistently one of the most requested coaches in our sports program.
Staff Member Awards
Jon Evans, the Executive Director for the Boys & Girls Clubs, presented the Management Staff member of the Year Award to Heidi Hagen.  Heidi has been a Club staffer for nearly 10 years.  She started out and currently serves as the Club’s Kindergarten Director, and in the past as a former Clarkston Unit Director and Summer Challengers Director.  Heidi always pours her heart and energy into the Club and really has a passion for the youth and community she serves.
